Genomics Institute Selects ULTRASTOR® For Campus-Wide Surveillance System

San Diego's Top Research Center Selects ULTRASTOR For Campus-Wide Surveillance System, Adding Greater Flexibility and Security to the Novartis Research Foundation's 260,000 Square Foot, State-of-the-Art  Bio, Chemistry and Information Sciences Facility.

The Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) is a company which discovers new medicines that address most demanding medical needs. GNF applies integrated state-of-the-art technologies in chemistry, biology, automation, and information sciences to identify new biological processes and disease-relevant mechanisms and develop new therapeutics in a variety of areas, including cancer biology, cardiovascular/metabolism, immunology, respiratory disease, neuroscience and infectious disease.

The Challenge

Scott Freeman, the security coordinator at GNF, was given three months timeline to design a long term storage system for the facility wide video surveillance system in on its vast campus located in a 260,000 square foot research center. Scott got advice from Nathan Chavez at Alarms Unlimited in San Diego to exam Enhance Technology's ULTRASTOR SAN platform to tackle their immediate and ever-growing storage needs.

"Due to the nature of work, we are recording digital video 24/7. The new system would need to be reliable and require almost no maintenance."

Scott Freeman Security Coordinator, Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation

The Solution

In order to prove the performance of new system, Scott performed a thorough test to ensure compatibility, interoperability and reliability. Performance testing included a 60 camera configuration, giving the institute the opportunity to record and preview security data, simultaneously, in real-time. "The system performed even better than promised" noted Freeman. As a result, when GNF sought to upgrade, Freeman turned to ULTRASTOR for a permanent solution.

"After a recommendation from Alarms Unlimited in San Diego, we decided on ULTRASTOR due to its flexibility, performance, and durability. This has been an outstanding choice"

Scott Freeman Security Coordinator, Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation

Performance, Reliability and Features

The ULTRASTOR ES3160P4 is a dual controller, Active-Active, iSCSI SAN storage solution designed for high data availability and 24/7 operation. Featuring eight 1GbE iSCSI data ports, users can attach the ES3160P4 to multiple servers to ensure data accessibility with high-performance and full iSCSI bandwidth. In addition to the ES3160P4's dual RAID controllers and I/O modules, the dual redundant power supplies and cooling modules are hot-swappable and are easily field-replaceable, providing the ultimate redundancy and reliability for mission critical and data intensive applications to meet storage requirements across the most demanding environments.

"We have experienced two power surges. No only did I not experience any data loss, the drives rebuilt themselves and kept right on functioning"

Scott Freeman Security Coordinator, Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation
